It was great seeing Street Fighter causing hype once again in the industry after a long absence, but now with BlazBlue getting critical reception and KoFXII dropping later this month- could this be the year that 2D fighters comeback?
It's not like 3D fighters are bringing anything new to the table. The SoulCalibur series has been solid but really hasn't done anything revolutionary since its Dreamcast iteration. Virtua Fighter 5 has a big cult following and is really an underrated brawler, but you never know what Sega has in store for that franchise. Tekken is Tekken at this point- hopefully 6 will bring something new, but the last time Namco surprised me was on the PS2.
The best 3D fighting game this generation has been Fight Night. I would have never predicted that after the 16bit era that a boxing game would reign supreme as the most revolutionary fighter in 2009- but it has...so far.
BlazBlue is not my speed, but there are a lot of GuiltyGear fans who will flock to it. SFIV is the first fighting game I really got into since VF5- its not as deep and engrossing but it has the right blend of arcade nostalgia and twitch gameplay that I crave.
Hopefully we will see more of these simple elements in future fighters, both 2D and 3D
